Create a new adjustment layer, select Levels...

Move the white slider to the left and the black one to the right.

Tricks:

Since the Hand and Zoom tools are not working when in the Levels dialag, simply use CTRL + and CTRL - to zoom, and, the scroll bars to move around.

With the Alt key hold down the Cancel button becomes a Reset button to return to the original settings.

After you have pasted something from a source document to your active document with some extra border of a different color, simply use the Layer Matting Defringe command.

This guide started

Icons with a small triangle in the bottom right corner have flyout palettes available. Simply hold down the mouse button and wait for a moment to make the palette appear. Then select a variant of the tool.

A double click on a tool opens a dialog box to enter some parameters for the tool, OR performs an extra action... like the Hand Tool.

Marquee Tool (M)

The Marquee Tool (M) is used to define selection ranges. The selection defines the range on wich the command act: copy what is in the selection, apply a filter on the selection, ...

With the Marquee Control Bar you can create a New selection, Add to an existing, Substract from an existing or even Intersect with an existing selection.

Used to add new text or edit existing text.

 Hand Tool (H)

Used to pan over the image in the view.
Double-Click on the Hand tool to fit the image on the screen.
With the Space key hold down the command in control is panning over the image. : Example Start drawing a rectangle and move it before finalizing it.

History Brush (Y)

A very useful tool to partially UNDO the last action.

Example: The original file has a set of color pencils. With the Image - Adjustment - Desaturate command we remove all the colors to have a greyscale image. Then, using the History Brush (Y) tool, we simply paint back the original, thus undoing the last action.
